If you just bought an EV, or you’re about to, the charging question hits fast. The car comes with a slow charger you plug into a regular wall outlet, and after a few weeks of that you realize it barely keeps up. That’s when most folks call us. A proper Level 2 charger runs on 240 volts, the same kind of circuit your dryer or range uses, and it’ll fill the battery overnight instead of over two days.

I’m Brandon. I’ve been wiring homes in the mid-Willamette Valley for over eleven years, and EV charger installs have become a big part of what we do around Albany, Corvallis, Salem, and Lebanon. My son works right alongside me on these. Every one is a little different depending on your panel, your garage, and how far the charger sits from your electrical service.

Here’s what the job actually involves in Oregon, what it tends to cost, and why the permit is not something to skip.

Yes, Oregon requires a permit for a Level 2 charger

This trips a lot of people up. A 240-volt EV charger is a new circuit on your home’s electrical system, and Oregon requires an electrical permit and an inspection for that work. It is not optional, and it is not a formality. A state or county inspector comes out, checks the wiring, the breaker, the grounding, and the connection at the panel, then signs off that it was done to code.

I’ve seen homeowners try to save a few hundred dollars by having a buddy or a handyman run the circuit with no permit. Two problems with that. First, an unpermitted install can come back to bite you when you sell the house, because it shows up on inspection. Second, and this is the one that matters, a 40 or 50 amp circuit done wrong is a real fire risk. Loose lugs and undersized wire heat up.

First we check whether your panel can handle it

Before I quote anything, I look at your electrical panel. A Level 2 charger pulls a lot of current, usually a 40 or 50 amp circuit, and your panel has to have room for it in two ways.

The first is physical space. I need two open slots for a double-pole breaker. If your panel is already full, we can sometimes use tandem breakers or do a small reshuffle, but not always.

The second is capacity, and this is the bigger one. Your whole house runs on a set number of amps. A lot of older homes around Lebanon, Sweet Home, and the older parts of Albany still have 100-amp service. Add a 50-amp charger on top of an electric range, water heater, dryer, and AC, and you can push past what that 100-amp panel was built to carry.

When that happens, the honest answer is that you need a service upgrade to 200 amps first. I’d rather tell you that up front than wire in a charger that trips your main breaker every time the dryer kicks on. A lot of newer homes already have 200-amp service and plenty of room, and those installs are quick.

Hardwired or a NEMA 14-50 outlet

There are two ways to set up a Level 2 charger, and I’ll walk you through which one fits your situation.

A NEMA 14-50 outlet is the same plug a lot of RVs and ranges use. We install the outlet, and your charger plugs right into it. The nice thing is you can unplug the unit and take it with you if you move, or swap it out later without an electrician. It’s a common, clean setup.

A hardwired charger is wired straight into the circuit with no plug. This is the way to go for higher-power units, for outdoor installs that need to stand up to Oregon weather, and any time you want the cleanest, most permanent setup. Hardwiring also lets some chargers run at their full amperage.

For most homeowners in the valley, the outlet works great and keeps your options open. If you’ve got a higher-end car that charges fast, or the charger is mounted outside, I’ll usually steer you toward hardwiring. Either way, I’ll tell you what makes sense for your car and your garage, not what costs the most.

What the install day looks like

A straightforward install is usually a half-day to a full day. Here’s the order it goes in:

  • I come out first, look at your panel, measure the run to where the charger will go, and give you a clear price and timeline before any work starts.
  • We pull the electrical permit with the state or county.
  • On install day, we mount the charger or outlet, run the conduit and wire from your panel to the spot, and land a new double-pole breaker in the panel.
  • We power it up, test that the car charges, and clean up after ourselves.
  • The inspector comes out and signs off. We handle scheduling that.

The single biggest thing that drives the time and the cost is the conduit run, meaning how far the charger sits from your panel and what’s in between. A charger on the garage wall right next to the panel is a fast, cheap job. A charger on the far side of a detached garage, with wire run through an attic or underground, takes more material and more labor.

What it’ll cost in the Albany area

I’ll be straight with you, because vague pricing helps nobody. For a typical Level 2 install in the Albany and Corvallis area, where the panel has room and the charger is close by, the install itself sits in the entry tier, not counting the charger unit.

That range moves with a few things:

  • Distance from the panel. A long conduit run, an underground trench, or a detached garage can add to the wire, conduit, and labor.
  • Panel work. If your panel is full and needs a reshuffle, that’s a bit more. If you’re on 100-amp service and need a 200-amp upgrade first, a service upgrade in our area is a separate job on its own.
  • Hardwired versus outlet. Pricing is close, with hardwiring sometimes a touch more for outdoor or high-amp setups.

Picking the right charger for your car

You don’t have to have the charger picked out before you call. Plenty of folks ask me what to buy, and I’m happy to point you toward a solid unit.

Around the valley I see a lot of Teslas, plus the Chevy Bolt, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Rivian, and the Hyundai and Kia electrics. Almost all of them charge on the same J1772 or NACS standard, and a good Level 2 charger handles whatever you’ve got, now and for the next car.

A few things worth thinking about. Match the charger’s amperage to what your car can actually accept, since a 48-amp unit does nothing extra for a car that only takes 32. Decide if you want WiFi and an app, which is handy for tracking cost but not required. And if it’s going outside, make sure it’s rated for it.
