Kitchen Remodel Electrical Code: What Oregon Requires
Here’s the thing nobody tells you before a kitchen remodel: the wiring is usually the part that surprises people. You picture new cabinets, a nice island, maybe a fridge that makes its own ice. What you don’t picture is your panel, your circuits, and an inspector with a flashlight. But that’s where a lot of the real work happens. Oregon has real rules about this stuff, and they exist because kitchens pull a lot of power in a small space. Toasters, microwaves, the disposal, the dishwasher, all running at once over a sink full of water. That’s a recipe for trouble if the wiring isn’t done to code. So before you fall in love with a backsplash, let me walk you through what Oregon actually requires when you remodel a kitchen, and why your older Albany kitchen probably needs more than a coat of paint behind the walls.
Two or More 20-Amp Small-Appliance Circuits
This is the one that trips people up, no pun intended. Oregon follows the National Electrical Code with its own state amendments, and the code says a kitchen needs at least two dedicated 20-amp small-appliance circuits feeding the counter outlets. Not one. Two, minimum.
Why? Because every gadget on your counter pulls real wattage. Run a coffee maker and a toaster on the same old 15-amp circuit and you’ll be walking to the panel to flip the breaker every morning. Splitting the counter outlets across two circuits keeps the load balanced so nothing browns out when you’re cooking breakfast for the family.
In a lot of older Albany homes, the whole kitchen runs off one circuit that also feeds the dining room and a bedroom upstairs. That was fine in 1965. It is not fine now, and it will not pass inspection. A remodel means we run new home runs back to the panel, which is part of why kitchen work almost always touches your electrical service.
Dedicated Circuits for the Big Appliances
Beyond those counter circuits, the big stuff each gets its own line. The code wants dedicated circuits so a single appliance isn’t sharing power with anything else and tripping breakers under load. Here’s what typically needs its own circuit in an Oregon kitchen remodel:
- Dishwasher, its own 15 or 20-amp circuit, often shared by code with the disposal only when the manufacturer allows it.
- Garbage disposal, dedicated circuit, switched at the wall.
- Built-in microwave, a 20-amp dedicated line, since a microwave pulls more than people think.
- Refrigerator, best practice and often required to be on its own circuit so a tripped breaker doesn’t quietly spoil your food.
- Electric range or wall oven, a heavy 240-volt circuit, usually 40 or 50 amps depending on the unit.
Add all that up and you can see why a real kitchen remodel needs more circuits than the old panel was ever built to hold. That’s the conversation I have with most homeowners early, so there are no surprises later.
GFCI and AFCI Protection: The Safety Rules
This is where Oregon code gets strict, and honestly, for good reason. Water and electricity in the same room means the rules tighten up.
GFCI protection is required on every kitchen counter outlet, no exceptions. GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter, and it’s the device that cuts power in a fraction of a second if it senses current going somewhere it shouldn’t, like through a person standing at a wet sink. Every receptacle serving the countertop has to be GFCI protected. The fridge and other outlets often need it too, depending on placement.
AFCI protection covers a different danger. Arc faults are the tiny sparks from damaged or loose wiring that start fires inside your walls before you ever smell smoke. Oregon code requires arc-fault protection on kitchen circuits, usually built right into the breaker at the panel. Between GFCI and AFCI, your kitchen is protected against both the shock risk and the fire risk. An inspector will check for both, and a missing one is an automatic fail.
Countertop Outlet Spacing, Islands, and Peninsulas
There’s a real geometry to where outlets go, and it’s not up to taste. The code rule for counters is that no point along the countertop can be more than 24 inches from a receptacle. In plain terms, that works out to an outlet at least every four feet, so you’re never stretching a cord across the stove to plug in the mixer.
Any counter space 12 inches wide or more needs an outlet. That little stretch beside the fridge counts. The backsplash behind the sink counts.
Islands and peninsulas have their own rules, and Oregon updated these in recent code cycles, so it matters who’s doing the work. An island or peninsula with countertop space generally needs at least one receptacle, placed where it won’t get soaked or blocked by an overhang. We figure this out from your cabinet layout before a single wire gets pulled, because moving an island outlet after the cabinets are in is an expensive afternoon nobody enjoys.
Lighting: Under-Cabinet and Recessed
Lighting is the part people get excited about, and it’s also where a remodel really starts to feel finished. Under-cabinet lights make your counters actually usable after dark, and recessed cans give you even, shadow-free light across the whole room.
Both need to be wired and installed to code. Recessed fixtures in particular have rules about clearance from insulation and the type of housing used, especially against an exterior wall, which matters in our wetter Willamette Valley winters. Under-cabinet runs need to be fed cleanly without daisy-chaining off a counter circuit that’s already carrying your appliances.
Good lighting also usually means new switches, sometimes dimmers, and the wiring behind the wall to support them. It’s the kind of thing that looks simple on a finished kitchen and is a fair bit of planning underneath. Done right, you flip one switch and the whole room just works.
Permits, Inspection, and Why DIY Kitchen Wiring Fails
Every one of these requirements gets checked by a county or city inspector, and a kitchen remodel in Oregon requires a permit. That’s not red tape for its own sake. The permit and inspection are what protect you, the next owner, and your insurance company if anything ever goes wrong.
